My reading tends to pick up in the wintertime. Being indoors with a good book after the children have gone to bed is the best. The silence surrounds me, and I can fall into another world or another life and release the day’s tension.
These are seven books that I have read during the winter months, and I had to share them because they are magical. I read a lot of fantasy and fairytale retellings, so that is mostly what you will find, with a few exceptions. Add these to your Goodreads winter reading list now!
I hope you find your next cozy winter read here!

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

This is the perfect winter read, and it is amazingly well-written. The best part is that it is part of a trilogy! I have always been a fan of folklore and fairytale retellings, so this series was right up my alley! It is based on Russian folklore and is filled to the brim with magical creatures.
Vasya has always had a connection to the otherworldly, but when her father remarries and her stepmother forbids that family from honoring the spirits, disaster strikes! Vasya must use her wits and powers to save those she loves.

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

This book was a delight during winter. This was an amazingly original take on the German fairytale Rumpelstiltskin. And it has a slow-burn romance to boot! If you like Spinning Silver, check out Uprooted, which is equally good!
Miryem, the daughter of an unwilling money lender, collects debts to feed her family, earning her a reputation for turning silver into gold. Unwittingly, she catches the attention of a fey king and so begins unraveling secrets that threaten everyone around her.

- Young Adult Fiction
Nevertell by Katharine Orton

One of my best friends, a librarian, read this and thought of me. Go figure. It is another folklore retelling based in Russia. I promise you will fall in love with this quick-paced fantasy.
Never knowing the world outside a Soviet prison camp, Lina and her friend Bogdan escape one night into a forest full of monsters, magic, and hidden secrets.

The Crossing Places by Elly Griffiths

I am changing it up with a mystery series now! I love a good mystery in the winter, and this series has been excellent! I fell in love with it and have read all 15 books in it, and you should, too! The main character is relatable and my favorite female lead in a book.
Ruth Galloway, a self-proclaimed overweight, middle-aged archeologist, lives alone in a cottage by the sea in England. One day, a detective walks into her office needing her forensic archeology skills, and her life will never be the same.

The Lion, the Witch, And the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

I immediately think of this book when winter comes around. I read this like most children in grade school and loved it. This is a classic I cannot wait to share with my son.
Four siblings are sent to the countryside, away from war-torn London, to stay with an old professor. During a typical game of hide-and-seek, they stumble upon a wardrobe that transports them to a wonderous land, and the adventure begins.

The Complete Gnomes by Wil Huygen

This book is near and dear to my heart. I grew up reading this book with one of my childhood best friends. I remember being cuddled up in her room in the winter, looking at the fantastic illustrations.
This book is also the basis for the show David the Gnome, which I loved watching as a child. Share this book with your children on a cold winter day.
